One thing that I wanted to see with a brand new website was a collection much of the VHS Marching Band history as we could gather together.  This led to the question of what information do we maintain and try to keep in a historical perspective.

What is the meat of the historical fact and what is the gravy that gives people a warm fuzzy feeling when looking up their class.  I think I have managed to come up with the separation.  While it may seem that I am focusing on high school information, I want the exact same information for the Alumni Band, since it will go on the same page in the history.

Pictures

Whole Band Picture (I want the picture of the whole band that is traditionally taken with the band on the bleachers – the best enhancement for this would be able to name everyone in the picture)

Other additional pictures that would consider gravy for this would include other “official images such as the picture of the seniors, the majorette picture, the flag corp picture, and any squad or class (9-12) picture that may exist.  Also helpful again would be to name everyone in the photographs.
General Information

Name of the Director for that year

Name of the Assistant Director for that year

Names of support staff (Majorette Adviser, Flag Adviser, etc.)

Names of the Band Officers for that year

Name of the Head Majorette for that year

Full Band Performance Schedule (gravy of course would be what songs were played at each performance)
Other Extras

Candid and general photos – if you can be fairly certain to what year a picture took place I would happily include it in a gallery on the history page.

Videos – I’m going to track down and digitize (or if you can get a video online that I can link to) all the performances that I can for a given year.

Any information that made the year special – suggestions include the year that the uniform design changed, the first year of the rain coats, changes in head directors, the start of a new band tradition.

I’ll have another article in the next week or so on how you can help out the website in other areas, so if the historian side of this isn’t your thing I’m sure there is something for anyone that has an interest in writing, pictures, video, or helping out the Alumni Band in general.
