The 2010 Performance Information

Most Treasured Alumni,

We are a mere 46 days (!) away from our annual performance at the 2010 Sailor Marching Band Festival on October 2nd and it’s time for you to begin letting me know if you will be able to attend and be a part of this year’s gala event. Please reply to this email with your affirmative response and also remind me what instrument you will be playing and if you need that instrument from the school. I will be glued to the computer with pen in hand awaiting your response. If you can’t do it this year, write back anyway. I love to hear from all of you and see what is happening in your lives.

We always have a music practice on the Saturday before (this year it’s 9/25) from 9-11 AM. It is not required, but if you can it will certainly help many of you. We don’t memorize our music and we do use lyres and carry our tunes. If you can’t aquire your own, we will have some lyres and flip folders available for purchase on 8/2. On the festival day we begin rehearsals at 9 AM break for lunch at noon, return at 1 and rehearse as long as we ned to or are able to. The Festival is at 7:30 PM and we as Alumni participants get in free.

DRESS: If you are new to the group this year, we wear yellow band shirts with the group name on the front and your grad. year on the back. We need to order them ahead of time, so if you need one–let us know about that ASAP as well so we can have that for you on the day of the festival. They are, about, $10.00.

OK–now what to wear on the bottoms. I thought long and hard about and decided this: I like the light tan, khaki look and think that is what we should be aiming for. Now–some people have light khaki or a darker khaki and some people have white. Whatever you have will be OK for a few years. No one is asking for anyone who doesn’t have the right color to immediately go out and purchase the complying color. But–let’s work toward getting to a light khaki.
I must say that–I don’t think that jeans are at all appropriate for our performance.

**We have put together an exciting and this year, commemorative show for the festival. Here goes:

Opener–We are going to open with sideline entrance drill to Long Train Running. For those of you who were on the ’07 Disney trip, we’ll try not to combine LTR with the Fight Song this time (inside joke). I’m going to rewrite a pretty simple drill that will be easy to learn so we can spend more time on the closer.

Majorette Feature– Dawn chose The Impression That I Get for the majorettes. It was a fun # that the Sailors used several years ago.

Flagline Feature– Lee the flagline maven, chose Memphis for her girls. I wanted Kansas City, Chicago, New York or (theme from) Dallas, but–oh well.

The rest of the show will be a tribute to former Sailor Band director Bill Burt who died in June.

Reset or down front number–This is going to be Basin Street Blues. One of Bill’s favorite #s. I am planning to write the “call” melody part of the song for any wind instrument (sorry drummers) so that all of Bill’s students can come down front and play that in his memory.

Alma Mater– Bobbi Emery (one of bill’s students and assistant VHSMB director for 12 years) will conduct it.

Closer– Two of the signatures of the Burt years were the diamond drill and backwards marching. Since we did the diamond drill last year we’re going to do MacArthur Park and backwards march off the field. This is a tougher drill to learn so we will need more time with it.
I can send you the music if I have your recent address in the files. Of course, if you know of any other alumni who would like to participate, send them to me via this email or our website– We’d love to have them “do it one more time” with us.

Majorettes and Flagline folks, please contact Dawn or Lee to indicate your desire to perform. I haven’t gotten the data files of the class of ’10 members yet, so if you know of any of them, tell them about this and have them contact me.

Thank you for all the suggestions I received over the year for preferred songs. I’d love to be able to program every suggestion that was given to me and we will attempt to do some of those songs as the show changes through the years.

OK–start practicing and get back to me if you can do it this year. It’s going to be a blast!!!!!!!!!
