One of the highlights of the 1955 football season was the half-time show presented at each home game by the high school marching band under the direction of their newly acquired director, William Burt.
The band began practice sessions on formations for the shows even before school opened, and continued to rehearse Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after school and 7th period on Friday.
An innovation was the double line of band members, playing the Fight Song through which the football squad entered the playing field at game time. The band was then seated in a specific section of the bleachers where they played during the times-out and tense moments.
Special shows included a Salute to Summer, Droodles, A Salute to Glenn Miller, a homecoming show in which the football Queen and players’ Moms and Das were honored, a “Get out and Vote” show promoting the bond issue, and finally at the last game, a review of all the shows.
The band had to work hard to present a different performance at each game, but favorable comments and increased spirit justified the hours spent.
