The Band Marches On
This year the Sailor Marching Band has gone through some rough waters. To start off the season approximately forty-five members of the band were first-year marchers, and there were only twelve senior members.
At the end of July, the seniors met with the freshmen to help them with their marching skills. Although there were not many seniors, they worked well with the band and showed enthusiasm and stressed PMA, Positive Mental Attitude.
The next biggest step was to learn a different halftime show for each of the first four home games in a row and to learn the festival show. This included a corner entrance to start off the show during the song “Wild, Wild West” and included the band’s trademark, the backward march during the song “MacArthur Park”. After tackling this, the band then took their show on the road and performed at away games and at band festivals in Avon Lake, Anthony Wayne, Sandusky, and Elyria. They held their own festival, on September 29, 1984, and had the Ida Bluestreak Band from Ida, Michigan, as overnight guests. The next day, both bands marched in the Woolybear Festival Parade. After such a busy season the marching band closed out with a well-deserved banquet.
