Marching On by Brenda Workman
There is a lot of tradition with the Sailor Marching Band. For instance, the “floating diamond” has been performed for the past twenty-four years. The marching band also marches off backward to the song “MacArthur Park.” The uniforms which the band presently wears are the same style as the original style used in 1956. For the past fifteen years, the marching band has hosted their own band festival.
“What does it take to be in marching band? For most, it is probably time. Band practice starts in late June for seniors. A week later other members practice. In addition to after-school practices, all band members must be enrolled in a band class during school. There they will memorize and hopefully pass their playing test. If they don’t pass their music or march well enough, they don’t perform in that show.
Mr. Henry reflected on the band’s progress “from day one we have grown, not in size but in sound and in marching ability.”
Not only does the band support the football team at every game, they also host many festivals and shows. The Senior Show is one of the most popular.
Vermilion Compliment – 10-3-1986
To the Editor and Vermilion: We have visited your school and have been hosted by the band students several times after performing at the Sailor Band Festival. This last visit in September was without question the best experience we have had. You band director, Mr. David Henry, does an excellent job organizing an excellent showcase for marching bands as well as preparing his own bands for their normal super performance. The parents of the band members graciously open their homes to our students to go into and provide a very positive experience for my students. You are fortunate to have teachers and parents of such quality.
I also must commend your bus service department, especially Oscar. We had electrical problems in one of our buses which was corrected. He came into the school Saturday evening to assist us. He is very knowledgable and a credit to your school’s excellent educational and support program.
Again, I commend you and your school system for employing such and outstanding staff. Having traveled to main schools I can say with confidence you have one of the best.
